Severe ice warning to motorists

Snow scene in Yorkshire

A severe weather warning remains in place for the Yorkshire and Humber region because of icy conditions.

Conditions on main roads have improved but motorists are still being urged to take care, especially on minor routes.

Police said there were 52 weather-related crashes in North Yorkshire on Thursday. No-one was injured.

About 6,000 homes lost power. Most supplies were restored by Thursday night, with the remaining 30 homes reconnected on Friday.

The Highways Agency said all main routes were treated overnight to ensure they were kept open.

But police warned that untreated minor roads would be "treacherous".

Planes leaving Leeds Bradford Airport were delayed by up to 12 hours on Thursday because of bad weather.

Delays were much less severe on Friday morning but passengers have been advised to check the airport's website for the latest updates.
