Crash couple want drink limit cut

The Peak family

A couple whose sons were killed in a crash caused by a drunk footballer are calling for a lower drink-drive limit.

Arron Peak, 10, and Ben Peak, eight, of Partington, Greater Manchester, died on the M6 in Staffordshire in June.

Ex-Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick is serving seven years for death by dangerous driving and drink-driving.

Amanda and Philip Peak want the UK to follow countries like Sweden and Poland, which have an extremely low legal blood-alcohol limit.

Two weeks ago, when the government announced new measures to crack down on speeding motorists and drink and drug-drivers, the couple said the plans were too little, too late.

'Not working'

"It's Christmas coming up and you know all those people are going to go out, get drunk, get in their car the next morning and not think of the consequences they are going to cause," Mrs Peak said.

Earlier last month, at the launch of a Road Safety Week in Manchester, Mrs Peak said: "The current level is not working. If lower levels can work in the European Union and Australia, I don't see why they can't work here."

According to the Department for Transport, 3,059 people were killed and 28,871 seriously injured on the roads last year.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has backed the Peaks, saying a lower legal blood alcohol limit was needed to cut road deaths.

Last week the Peak family called on McCormick to support government proposals to clamp down on excessive speeders.
