Man killed by police car is named

A pedestrian who was hit by a marked police car answering an emergency call in Surrey has been identified.

Archibald McIlveen, 75, from Islington, London, was killed when he was hit by a Ford Mondeo on the A244 in Hersham heading to a report of a burglary.

Mr McIlveen died from his injuries at the scene of the accident at 1855 GMT on Tuesday 4 November.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated by Thames Valley Police.

'Tragic incident'

Senior investigating officer, Insp Mary Chapman, said: "Thames Valley Police were contacted shortly after the collision and have been conducting a full and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.

"I am appealing for anyone who can help us build a better picture of the moments before this tragic incident to get in touch.

"I especially want to hear from drivers who were on the road at that time and saw the police car travelling eastbound from Walton towards Esher or who witnessed the actual collision."

The marked Ford Mondeo was responding to an emergency call when the collision took place on the A244 Esher Road, close to the junction with Ramornie Close.

Surrey Police had been told an intruder had entered a rear garden in the Claygate area of Esher.

Local councillor, John Sheldon, 76, who witnessed the aftermath of the collision, described the 40mph limit road as "a blight on the neighbourhood" and said there had been numerous previous crashes.
