Hadrian's 'brand' boosts economy

Hadrian's Wall

Businesses have given the thumbs up to an organisation developing the visitor potential of Hadrian's Wall.

Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd (HWHL) was set up in 2006 by groups including One North East and English Heritage to attract visitors all along the wall.

Of the 450 businesses across its route between Tyneside and the Cumbrian coast, 78% said the group was having a positive impact on the economy.

The organisation also helps protect and conserve the World Heritage Site.

HWHL, which hopes to build the area into a brand, will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday.

The businesses which responded positively found the Hadrian's Wall brand had raised the profile of the area, resulting in a positive impact on its economy.

Linda Tuttiett, chief executive of HWHL, said: "The wall has massive potential, we want it to make sure it's as well known to all visitors to Britain as Stonehenge is.

"We want to make sure that what we are offering visitors is encouraging them to stay for longer."
