Fifty post offices are to close

Fifty post offices across Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire are to shut and consultation has begun for 27 more proposed closures in the Black Country.

One post office, in The Green, Kings Norton, Birmingham, has been saved after a consultation over the plans held by the Post Office.

Twenty-nine branches will close across Birmingham and Solihull and another 21 in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Four others in Warwickshire will be replaced by an "outreach solution".

The first closures have been scheduled to take place in September.

The Post Office said 99% of Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire would see no change to their existing branch or would remain within a mile by road distance of an alternative branch.

Public consultation

It said about 2,600 responses were received and 50 meetings with customers and their representatives were held.

Mark Partington, Post Office Ltd's Network Development Manager for Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly.

"We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation."

The Post Office had been considering a new trial outlet at Selsey Road, Birmingham, to replace the current post office which is on the list of those closing.

But it warned it may not be possible to do this.

The Post Office has opened a six-week local public consultation over the Black Country area, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Fifty-six post offices have been proposed for closure across those areas, with 13 other branches across Herefordshire and Worcestershire proposed for replacement by an outreach solution.
