Town is back in unitary proposal

Plans for a new unitary local authority in Suffolk are to include Lowestoft despite a previous proposal to transfer the town to neighbouring Norfolk.

The Boundary Committee drawing up plans for a new local government structure for the East had recommended the separation of Lowestoft.

It was destined to be included with Great Yarmouth in a unitary authority spanning two counties.

The county council has been asked to include Lowestoft in plans for Suffolk.

Suffolk County Council chief executive Andrea Hill has welcomed the Boundary Committee's change of tack.

The council is working on two alternatives - one whole authority for the county and a rural Suffolk unitary option.

Ms Hill said: "Lowestoft is a valued and integral part of our community. Let's make sure the Boundary Committee keeps it that way."
