Woman badly hurt at rubbish tip

An elderly woman suffered serious leg injuries after being crushed between two cars at a rubbish tip.

The 68-year-old from Cumbria was unloading items at Darlington's Whessoe Road site when she became trapped between her Honda and a Vauxhall Corsa.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the town's memorial hospital, where her condition is stable.

The driver of the Corsa was uninjured, said Durham Police.

The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive.
