'Safety town' top of crash table

Brunel roundabout in Slough One of the first places in the UK to model itself as a "safety town" is the most dangerous in the country for car accidents, according to a survey.

Slough in Berkshire, which is ringed by traffic lights and speed cameras, topped a most-accident table compiled by an insurance company.

The town had an accident rate 35.7% above the national average in 2007.

Ilford in east London and Birmingham came second and third, while Belfast, Swansea and Aberdeen were the "safest".

Slough's safety promotions go back to the 1960s, when it introduced lights timed to be on green as long as drivers stuck to the speed limit.

Motor thefts fall

In recent years, the number of lights encircling the town and its industrial estate has grown.

Ilford's accident rate was 35.5% above the national average and Birmingham's 32.9%.

However, Belfast's figure fell 47% below the national average while Swansea's came in 29.9% below it and Aberdeen's at 20.6% below.

Hull was the place with the most vehicle thefts in 2007, being 143.9% above the national average and second was Nottingham with Leeds in third place.

The table was compiled by Endsleigh Insurance Services, which said it had seen a 13% fall in motor theft claims across the UK in the last three years.
