Roads cleared after snow flurry

Derbyshire's Peak District was the worst affected, but snow also fell in Shropshire, Warwickshire, Bedfordshire, Leics, Birmingham and Sheffield.

In Shropshire up to 4,000 homes were left without power and up to two inches of snow fell in Northamptonshire.

However, by the morning rush hour much of the snow had melted. Gritters had been on standby if conditions worsened.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: "We don't expect it to get any worse. If it does then there will be road closures but that's not been mentioned yet."

West Mercia Constabulary were called to "a couple of incidents" and gritters were deployed in parts of Leicestershire.

A crash involving three vehicles on the M42, between Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield, left eight people injured as the heavy snow hit the West Midlands.
