Murder suspect appears in court

Deborah Jane Townsend A man has appeared in court in Suffolk charged with murder after being extradited from Thailand.

Christopher Alan Caunter, 35, arrived in the UK on Thursday morning following his arrest in Thailand last June.

He appeared before Ipswich magistrates on Thursday charged with murdering Londoner Deborah Townsend, 35, at or near Beccles, Suffolk, on 15 July 2005.

He was remanded in custody until 4 May when he will appear before Ipswich Crown Court.

The body of Ms Townsend, of East Ham, was found in a car in Essex in July 2005. Her hair and scalp tissue were found on the A146 at Beccles.

Mr Caunter, from Essex, did not enter a plea and no application was made for bail.
