MP supports Gatwick Express axing

Train company signs An MP has put himself at odds with 57 others with a Commons motion in favour of Gatwick Express trains being axed.

A review is ongoing into the future of the non-stop rail service from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria.

Government proposals are looking at possibly replacing the Gatwick Express with a stopping service in south London, Surrey and Sussex.

Andrew Pelling, the Conservative MP for Central Croydon, said it would "free up much needed track space".

The planned changes are part of an overhaul of the congested main line route between Brighton and London.

The non-stop Gatwick Express has run since 1984, but there are moves to open up the line.

Andrew Pelling, Conservative MP for Central Croydon

A Department for Transport (DfT) consultation put forward three replacement options of a modified, non-stop Gatwick service that would be open to commuters as well as airport travellers.

A fourth proposal would see a semi-fast service also calling at Redhill, East Croydon and Clapham Junction.

Mr Pelling said commuter trains on the Brighton to London line were currently "more heavily used" than the Gatwick Express.

But a Commons motion against scrapping it has been signed by 57 MPs.

And airports operator BAA has been backed by several major airlines in its Save the Gatwick Express campaign.

A DfT decision on the Brighton to London route is expected in the spring.
