Call for more affordable housing

House under construction The importance of sustainable housing in the South West of England has been raised by the regional assembly.

The organisation has made a recommendation to the government that 79% of the region's housing money should be spent on affordable housing.

The assembly represents a population of almost five million from the Isles of Scilly to Gloucestershire.

It says that in some parts of Cornwall house prices are currently about 15 times more than local incomes.

Lowest efficiency

The housing body of the assembly has been monitoring housing trends in the South West.

Spokesman Alan Connett said: "The Regional Assembly is working hard to make a difference to improve the balance of housing markets, achieve good quality affordable housing and support sustainable communities."

The housing advice group says construction rates are increasing, but there is still a need for more affordable housing.

The area has the lowest energy efficient housing in England and more than 60% of social and private sector homes do not meet the Decent Homes Standard (DHS).

According the government's Communities and Local Government Department, a decent home should be warm, weatherproof and have reasonably modern facilities.
