Measures to solve rail problems

A One train Measures are to be put in place following overhead power line problems on the London to Norwich route causing chaos on three occasions in one week.

One Railway and Network Rail carried out an investigation into the problems on 30 August, and on 1 and 5 September.

Some commuters were delayed by up to six hours.

Action to be taken includes an independent review by industry experts of overhead line equipment, One Railway and Network Rail said in a statement.

A special monitoring train will also assess the condition of the overhead line equipment and check for any faults.

Speed restrictions

Additional maintenance work and examination of overhead line equipment at relevant locations will also take place.

The cause of the disruption on 30 August was a fault with the component that allows the overhead lines to expand and contract in changing temperatures.

The cause of the disruption on 1 September is still being investigated, while the problems on 5 September were caused by a potential fault leading to precautionary speed restrictions.

One Railway and Network Rail also pledged to improve information provision and station announcements during disruption.
