Four museums in the north-east of England and Cumbria are to share in a grant of £470,000.
The money is being awarded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation and will be used to improve museum displays.
The County Durham-based Bowes and Beamish Museum are set to benefit from the grants as well as the History Gallery at Tullie House in Carlisle.
South Shields Museum and Art Gallery is also set to benefit.
Forty-three museums nationwide will share in a total of £4m in grants in all.
Steam locomotive
Culture Minister David Lammy said: "From Carlisle to King's Lynn, museums and galleries will be building new exhibition spaces, renovating galleries, restoring exhibits and improving the visitor experience.
"Our museums and galleries enjoy a worldwide reputation and the fund enables our institutions to provide an even higher level of service."
Beamish open air museum has been awarded £40,000 to spend on overhauling its Stephen Lewin steam locomotive.
The Bowes Museum will spend £300,000 on its textile and fashion displays and Tullie House will put its £50,000 towards the renovation of the Social History Gallery.
South Shields Museum and Art Gallery has been awarded £80,000 to improve displays.
