A total of 23 schools in County Durham are facing closure under a major review of surplus school places in the county.
Most of the threatened schools are primary schools, but two of them are secondary.
The comprehensive schools are Fynedoune Community College in Sacriston and Sunnydale Comprehensive in Shildon.
A further 96 schools in the county face possible merger with neighbouring schools.
There are 306 state schools in County Durham, and at least third of them face a period of uncertainty.
The review, published on Wednesday, followed last week's announcement of the county's £300m masterplan for education.
The big concern was nearly 12,000 surplus school places - averaging 10% in secondary schools and 17% in the primary schools - that cost £150 each every year.
The review will cover every school in the county, although 45 church schools will be dealt with separately.
Durham County Council has insisted the review is a blueprint for excellence, and not a "hit list".
