Man in court over B-52 protest

A B-52 at RAF Fairford A man will appear in court on Tuesday charged with aggravated trespass after being arrested at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The protestor was one of nine men and 10 women arrested at the base on Sunday, accused of cutting through fencing to get closer to US B-52 bombers.

The planes are expected to be at the forefront of any attack against Iraq.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said those arrested were aged between 19 and 37 and came from all over the UK - including Oxfordshire, Cardiff, London, Tyne and Wear, Manchester and Surrey.

Stop and search

The man will appear before Cirencester Magistrates' Court.

Eight others charged with aggravated trespass are due before Cheltenham magistrates on 26 March

Two people arrested for breach of the peace were not charged, and three were released without charge.

Three others were bailed to report back to Stroud police station on 21 March and two were given official police cautions.

Gloucestershire Police have stepped up patrols at the base since the arrival of the B-52s, and have also invoked special stop and search powers to detain anyone regarded as suspicious within a mile of the perimeter fence

There has been a steady stream of peace protestors outside the base since the bombers arrived.
