Shot PC 'improving' in hospital

A policeman is improving in hospital after being shot by a motorist.

PC William Morrison, 48, was shot after approaching three men in a Saab car near Highbury Corner at 0445 GMT on Saturday.

He came under fire when he gave chase to the driver, who ran off. The other two men drove off in the car.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and police have found the car but are still appealing for witnesses to the attack.

'Callous attack'

The attack happened almost exactly a year after PC Morrison was stabbed by a man who was threatening a girl with a knife in Finsbury Park, north London.

Scotland Yard described PC Morrison's condition as stable and "improving" on Sunday.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Shatford described it as a "callous attack" on an unarmed officer.

He added: "We are devoting a great deal of resources into investigating this very serious incident, which we are treating as attempted murder."
