Carlisle 'out of administration'

The owner of Carlisle United Football Club has said he expects the club to come out of administration within a week.

At a news conference at Brunton Park, Irish businessman John Courtenay said he hopes the club will clear its final financial hurdle by Tuesday, 8 September.

Mr Courtenay took over the club, which went into voluntary administration in June, in August.

Since then he has been paying off money owed by Carlisle United and putting it on a sound financial footing.

'Major issue'

He said: "Coming out of administration means that the people who are trying to run the club will be running the club.

"Up till now we seem to have been running the club, but everything we do has to be approved by the administrators.

"We hope to be out of administration by Tuesday, or a within a day or two of then.

"There is one major issue that has to be dealt with, and we are confident we can deal with that today or tomorrow."

Popular choice

Mr Courtenay bought the club following months of discussions with previous owner Michael Knighton.

He was given a hero's welcome by supporters during the summer, who also greeted his reappointment of Roddy Collins as manager.

Joint administrators are David Elliott and David Walker of BKR Haines Watts.

The team is currently struggling near the bottom of the English Nationwide League Division Three.
