Body found floating in city centre

Workmen spotted the fully-clothed body on Wednesday morning in Clarence Dock close to the Royal Armouries museum.

Detective Superintendent Jim Bancroft said he was treating the death as suspicious because the man had a broken jaw which was probably caused by "a blow".

But it is still not clear whether the man drowned or died in some other way.

Pony tail

Mr Bancroft said no possessions were found on the body except for a necklace with a dolphin motif and a bracelet on his wrist.

He said the man was probably in his late twenties and was more than six feet tall with long brown hair tied in a pony tail.

"He was reasonably well dressed as you would expect to find anybody in their late 20s," he continued.

"I would expect this chap to have people who would miss him."

Mugging victim

It is thought the body had been in the water for about two days.

It is most likely the broken jaw was caused by a blow from a fist or a foot.

Asked whether the man could have been the victim of a mugging Mr Bancroft replied: "That's a possibility."
