Police appeal for wanted paedophile
News of the World has named convicted paedophiles
Police have taken the unusual step of releasing a photograph of a convicted paedophile who has been on the run for six months in a bid to trace him.
Rifat Mehmet, 36, was convicted for child sex offences and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register on his release, Scotland Yard's Paedophile Unit said.
Mehmet, originally from Essex, has since gone missing and has failed to inform police of his current address.
The move may have been influenced by the success of an appeal for information about missing paedophiles in last week's News of the World newspaper.
Scotland Yard issued the paper with a number of photographs of convicted paedophiles who had gone missing.
Two of the men - Tuan Quang Ho and David Baron - were later traced by police.
The newspaper began "naming and shaming" paedophiles last summer following the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne by Roy Whiting.
'Unusual step'
Detective Chief Inspector Bob McLachlan, from the unit, said: "Rifat Mehmet, 36, has been convicted of sexual offences against a child.
"He has breached his obligations under the Sex Offenders Act 1997 by failing to inform police of his current residential address.
"It is thought that he is living in the London or Essex area - though he could be living elsewhere."
He added that it was unusual for police to appeal for information in this way.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mehmet should contact the Metropolitan Police Service Child Pornography Line on 0808 100 0040 or the Metropolitan Police Service Paedophile Unit on 020 7230 3104
