Childminder guilty of killing baby

A childminder who shook a baby in her care has been found guilty of killing him.

Linda Bayfield, 54, was convicted by a jury at the Old Bailey of the manslaughter of eight-month-old Joshua Osborne.

Joshua died in July, last year, after being shaken by Bayfield at her home in Sissinghurst Avenue, Addiscombe, south London.

She claimed she had been trying to revive him after he stopped breathing, but the jury rejected that claim.

Instead, they believed experts who said Joshua showed classic signs of having been shaken and had died of brain damage.

A charge of murder was dropped during the trial by the prosecution.

Bayfield was remanded on conditional bail until January 18 for pre-sentence reports.

The judge, the Common Sergeant of London Peter Beaumont warned her: "All sentence options remain open."
