Four children die in house fire

Four children have died after a blaze broke out at a terraced house in London.

The fire started at about 0200GMT at the house in Deptford Wharf, south-east London, a Metropolitan police spokesman said.

Firefighters managed to rescue the two girls aged nine and 15, and the two boys, aged 18 months and eight, from the house.

But the four children later died in hospital.

It is believed they were from the same family but they have not yet been formally identified.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and anyone with information is urged to call police.

Post-mortem examinations are due to start at 1400 GMT.
