Toll on UK troops in Afghanistan

One hundred UK troops have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

It brings the total number killed since the campaign began in 2001 to 237, with more deaths and injuries in 2009 than in any previous year.

The UK mission in Afghanistan has been focused on securing the southern province of Helmand, so it comes as no surprise that the vast majority of British fatalities, 206 people - more than 85% - have taken place there.

In addition to the fatalities, many troops have been injured. A total of 986 of them were wounded in action up to 15 November 2009.

Of those, 432 were wounded in 2009, which was well over the figure for any of the previous years of the operation.
