Stolen antiques valued at Roadshow

Police are hunting a burglary suspect who took a stash of stolen silver to the BBC's Antiques Roadshow for valuation.

The suspect was told his antiques were worth £20,000 when he took them to a show filmed in Middlesbrough.

It later emerged the goods were stolen and police have interviewed the experts and programme-makers.

The man is described as a "military gent" in his late 50s or early 60s with a handlebar moustache. He was smartly-dressed, wearing a blue blazer, white shirt and dark tie.

Executive producer of the show, Christopher Lewis, said it "would be a first" if the man was proved to be a thief.

Not filmed

"It is obviously pretty crazy for a burglar to bring stolen goods to an Antiques Roadshow.

"Police are present at the show anyway and if we ever see anybody who is even the slightest bit suspicious we are cautious and would alert the police, but none of that occurred," he told the BBC.

The man was not filmed for the programme, which has yet to go out, and none of the experts can remember him.
