'Hard to beat'
Few doubt the scale of the crisis facing Labour - the Daily Mirror talks of "a brutal week" for Gordon Brown.
The Guardian thinks bad luck "has played its part", but says Mr Brown himself was also to blame.
"As a way to lose friends and alienate people, promising cash handouts before cancelling them is hard to beat", the paper says.
In the Times, Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman admits there is "dissatisfaction" with the party.
Stormy times
As though it were a Shakespearean play, the weather has seemed keen to match the economic mood of the country.
The Daily Express shows waves breaking over a train at Dawlish in Devon. In the Daily Mail, motorway traffic disappears into a thick mist of spray.
Turn to the Financial Times, and there you find talk of gloom as the stock market falls.
The Daily Mail reckons £100bn was wiped off the value of the top companies during the week.
Manor born
The opportunity exists for someone to escape the climatic and economic gloom - but at a price.
A photograph in the Daily Express shows the rolling acres of woods and fields that run from Kelling Hall to the Norfolk coast.
Much of it is up for sale - the hall itself, its estate and shooting, its seven cottages, a converted barn and more than 10 holiday homes.
"Yours for £25m, manor with a village thrown in", says the Daily Telegraph.
