The historic Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare has been destroyed in a blaze.
Dozens of firefighters fought to tackle the fire which took hold of the partly wooden pier in the North Somerset seaside resort early on Monday.
No-one was injured, though black smoke and flames were said to be visible from as far away as Cardiff, Gloucestershire and north Devon.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
