As English Heritage releases a list of sites considered to be at risk, BBC News takes a look around six of them.
The sites, all said to be under threat from "neglect, decay or inappropriate change", include Bowes Railway, one of the world's first modern railways.
Uxbridge Lido, the only remaining star-shape swimming pool in the country, needs updating to meet health and safety standards.
Modern developments are threatening the site of the Battle of Newbury which was watched by King Charles I in 1643 during the English Civil War.
One in twelve heritage sites are at risk and English Heritage hopes people will help save their local attractions.
