Presenter to carry Olympic torch

Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq will take part in the Olympic torch relay despite condemning China's treatment of Tibetan protesters.

Huq was chosen as a torch bearer for when the relay goes through London but had been unsure whether to take part.

She has now announced she will fulfil the role, while condemning the Chinese regime's actions as "despicable".

The Free Tibet Campaign is calling on torch bearers to re-consider their roles and boycott the ceremonies.

Huq, 32, said she had decided to take part because she was committed to the Olympic ideals, "which reach out to people across the globe".

"I am also carrying the torch for London 2012, which I believe will be an event which will enhance the lives of everyone in the capital as well as encapsulating all the true Olympian values," she said.

"My participation does not in any way indicate support for the harsh and oppressive manner in which the Chinese regime continues to treat the people of Tibet, and which I find despicable."

The ceremony for the lighting of the Olympic torch in Greece on Monday was briefly disrupted by pro-Tibet activists.

European Union foreign ministers are gathering in Slovenia to debate a possible boycott of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Anti-China demonstrations - the biggest for 20 years, have left several people dead since they broke out on 10 March.
