Muktar Said Ibrahim was born in Asmara in what is now Eritrea in January 1978.

He arrived in the UK in the 1990s and lived in Stoke Newington, north London and gained a British passport.

Ibrahim headed the conspiracy - he went to Pakistan in late 2004 where it is believed he was taught how to make the bombs.

Ibrahim detonated his bomb on a bus in Hackney, east London on 21 July. He was arrested at a flat in North Kensington a week later in dramatic scenes as police surrounded the property.

Yassin Omar was born in Somalia in January 1981 and came to the UK as a child in the early 1990s, as a refugee from the civil war.

Omar's home became the bomb factory for the conspiracy. Hundreds of litres of hydrogen peroxide were brought into the home and used to make the bombs.

Omar detonated his bomb on the Tube near Warren Street station. Eyewitnesses saw him blown off his feet by the detonator's force - but the main charge did not ignite.

Hussain Osman, 28, was born in Ethiopia and his real name was Hamdi Adus Issac.

On 21 July 2005 he was living at Blair House in Stockwell, south London, with his partner and their children. He allegedly detonated his bomb on an Underground train near Shepherds Bush, west London.

Osman fled the UK after the attacks, seeking refuge in Rome at the home of a brother. He was tracked down and arrested within days. He claimed after his arrest that the bombs were a deliberate hoax designed to make a "political point".

Ramzi Mohammed, 25, is a Somali national who came to Britain in the 1990s.

A father of two, Mr Mohammed detonated his bomb on the Northern Line near Oval station.

An off-duty fire-fighter confronted and challenged him, temporarily preventing his escape. This delay helped to provide critical CCTV evidence for the police.

He was arrested at his flat in Dalgarno Gardens, North Kensington, on 29 July.
