British soldier killed in Basra

British Soldiers in Iraq (generic) A British soldier has been killed in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier, from the 4th Battalion The Rifles, died after an indirect fire attack on the Provincial Joint Co-ordination Centre in Basra.

The MoD said the soldier's next of kin had been informed. Further details are expected to be released on Thursday.

The latest death, which took place early this morning, takes the total number of UK troops killed in operations in Iraq to 152.
