Man charged over sword attack

A man has been charged with one count of attempted murder following an incident in a South London church on Sunday.

Unemployed Eden Strang, 26, of Thornton Heath, Surrey, was charged in connection with a samurai sword attack on the congregation at nearby St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Scotland Yard said.

Mr Strang is charged with trying to kill Paul Chilton outside the church.

He will appear before Croydon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Mr Chilton, who is also from the Thornton Heath area, is critically ill at the Mayday Hospital in Croydon.

Eleven churchgoers were injured in the incident which happened during a morning service.

Five are recovering at Mayday Hospital. Three patients were discharged from the hospital on Sunday night, while two more are at St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London.
