September set for weather record

Person drinking water This month is set to be the hottest September on record across the UK, the Met Office has said.

The average figure for the month has been 15.4C (59.7F), which is 3.1C (5.6F) above the long-term average.

Weather forecasters have put the high temperatures down to warm winds and mild nights but warn the good conditions are about to break.

The previous record high for September had been 14.7C (58.5F), which was set in 1949.

Darren Bett from the BBC Weather Centre said "we haven't really seen any winds from the north and it's been pretty warm at night. But the warm weather is about to finish."

Records broken

Night-time minimum temperatures have been particularly high at 11.5C (52.7F) which beats the previous record of 10.6C (51.1F), also set in 1949.

The Met Office said although several days remain in September, its climate experts are confident that records will be broken around the country, and in many cases by some margin.

Historical climate records for the UK are kept at the Met Office in Exeter.
