Welsh rugby legends immortalised on Net

Welsh rugby legends immortalised on Net
Some of the all-time great names from Welsh rugby are to be honoured in cyberspace with their very own websites.

The growing demand for sports information on the Information Superhighway has prompted one company to perpetuate the memory of players from the heyday of the game in Wales.

Mervyn Davies, Barry John, John Dawes and JPR Williams will feature on new websites being run by Internet company UK-WWWEB Limited.

The Welsh Womens Rugby Union also had the distinction of having its own website unveiled at a ceremony in Cardiff on Sunday.

There are plans by UK-WWWEB Limited later this year to honour other greats from the game, past and present, including Neil Jenkins, Ieaun Evans, David Watkins, Cliff Morgan and Jonathan Davies.

JPR Williams and Mervyn Davies were key members of the 1974 British Lions tour side to South Africa, which featured other Welsh stars, including Bobby Windsor, JJ Williams, Gareth Edwards, Phil Bennett and Tommy David.

Famous victories

Plans for a Neil Jenkins are timely, with the Welsh outside half at the peak of his form.

Jenkins led Wales to famous Five Nations wins over England and France, a victorious tour of Argentina and the historic defeat of South Africa at the new Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

At a special launch of the new legends websites at Cardiff High School Old Boys, in Whitchurch, the day fittingly featured a full programme of rugby from Cardiff Under 12s and Cardiff Under 14s.

A charity fund-raising auction in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust also took place, hosted by Welsh international Ben Evans and S4C television presenter Non Evans.

WWWEB Limited also runs websites for Cardiff RFC, Pontypridd RFC, Neath RFC, Llanelli RFC, Ebbw Vale RFC and Penallta RFC.

Further afield, the company has contracts with Allied Dunbar Premiership sides, including Bath and Wasps and the Australian Rugby Union.
