£14.5m drugs seizure

Strathclyde Police and the Scottish Crime Squad recovered more than 105kg of heroin in Glasgow on Monday evening.

The drugs were found in the St George's Road, Townhead and Springboig areas of the city, a Strathclyde Police spokesman said.

Three men, aged 30, 37 and 42, were arrested and are being held in police custody. The police spokesman said a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Strathclyde Police Chief Constable John Orr expressed his satisfaction at the seizure.

"It's the biggest heroin seizure in Scotland by far," he said.

"There is no doubt that enforcement must be a key factor and a key determinant in how we tackle the whole drugs issue."

The announcement of the seizure came ahead of what has been hailed as the biggest conference on drugs ever held in Britain.

More than 15,000 schoolchildren, parents and teachers were taking part in the event organised by Strathclyde Police.

Police said the conference, at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, was designed to follow "Spotlight on Drugs". The campaign saw the arrest of more than 1,400 dealers and the recovery of £9m worth of illegal substances.

The aim of the "Choices for Life" conference, which was supported by other organisations including the Scottish Sports Council, was to discourage as many youngsters as possible from getting involved with drugs.

John Orr said the Strathclyde force would continue to adopt a hard line with those who inflict misery on society.

And he said: "Children need to know that there are far better choices to be made in life and through this major event, we hope it will provide them with the information to make the right choices."
