The private members bill to ban hunting with hounds has provoked strong emotions and each side is determined to push its view.
Animal welfare groups and country sports lovers held separate vigils outside Downing Street in a bid to sway the decision in their favour.
Most Labour MPs are expected to support the vote in Parliament on whether to ban hunting with hounds.
The Bill was introduced by Labour MP Mike Foster, but the Government has not given it extra parliamentary time and it is unlikely to become law.
However, opponents of blood sports are hoping that a massive majority in the House of Commons in favour of the Bill will put enough pressure on the Government.
The Bill is expected to gain a majority of about 200 MPs, including many ministers, on a free vote.
As many as half the members of the Cabinet are expected to turn up and vote for the measure.
