Top detective joins Dando inquiry

Top detective joins Dando inquiry
A senior detective will scrutinise the Jill Dando murder investigation to find out why the killer of the BBC presenter has not been found within 28 days.

The Metropolitan police force introduced the new reviewing procedure after the failure to bring the killers of black teenager Stephen Lawrence to justice.

Clues to the Dando murder
Detective Chief Superintendent Barry Webb, 45, will question detectives on possible leads and examine records of decisions taken.

His team of 44 detectives was one of three set up in April to look at murders unsolved after 28 days, with the Dando murder the most high-profile case under review.

Mr Webb is the second high-ranking officer to have re-examined the Dando case since it failed to make an early breakthrough.

Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Edwards replaced Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell as senior investigating officer of the case within a fortnight of Miss Dando, 37, being killed by a single shot to the head on her doorstep in Fulham, west London.

Mr Campbell retains day-to-day control of the inquiry, Mr Edwards directs operations and will have the final say over whether a suspect is charged.

Despite many sightings of a suspect fleeing from the scene, the release of an E-fit picture and an appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch programme, no one has been arrested.

Those with information are asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or the police incident room on 0181 246 0732.
