UK soldier dies in Iraq accident

Richard Ivell A British soldier has died in a road accident at a military base in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

Richard Thomas David Ivell, 29, a mechanic with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, died at the Shaibah Logistics Base on Thursday.

The MoD said there was "no hostile action" at the southern Iraqi base.

Corporal Ivell was from near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and was married with three children. He is the 59th UK soldier to have died in Iraq.

The special investigations branch of the Royal Military Police is to carry out a full investigation, the MoD said.

Cpl Ivell had been serving with 2 Close Support Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps, who are usually based in Germany.

Father's tribute

Robert Ivell, from Doncaster, paid tribute to his son.

"I think for Richard the Army was his life and he loved it. He loved serving where it was felt he was needed.

"He had real heart and a compassion for people.

"I think the amount of friends he had and the way all the people who have ever spoke to him really respected him as a man and called him a close friend shows that.

Mr Ivell said he could not have asked for a better son and said Cpl Ivell was also "a super father and husband".
