Detectives will appeal for more witnesses to come forward as a reconstruction of the murder of Jill Dando is broadcast on the very show she used to host.

Tributes will also be paid to the 37-year-old broadcaster on Tuesday's edition of the BBC's Crimewatch UK which will open without titles or music.

The officer in charge of the investigation will make a live appeal for information in the hunt for her killer.

Ms Dando was murdered with a single shot to the head outside her home in south west London three weeks ago.

Film crews spent two days in the street in Fulham where she was gunned down preparing material for the Crimewatch appeal.

The production team reveal that it was the most difficult assignment they have ever had. But Nick Ross, who will present the show on his own, says everyone is glad to be able to help the police.

"It seems quite unreal doing an appeal about Jill rather than with her," Mr Ross said.

"The whole team had been so upset by her death, and yet at least all the work on the reconstruction and other planning makes us feel we are doing something useful, a privilege most friends and relations of victims don't have."

The programme's producers and editors have spent Tuesday deciding which scenes they will include in the programme.

Actors have been used in the reconstruction, but there will be no scenes featuring a Jill Dando lookalike.

It is hoped that the images will help jog the memories of witnesses who might have spotted a number of men detectives would like to interview.

A dark haired, heavily sweating man is still their prime suspect.

Nick Ross is hoping that the massive publicity coupled with this special edition of Crimewatch UK will provide the breakthrough the police need.

The reconstrucion will be broadcast along with a live interview with the man leading the Scotland Yard murder hunt, Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell.

He had also worked alongside Jill Dando on previous Crimewatch UK cases.

Police officers in plain clothes might be sent to Jill Dando's funeral in Weston-super-Mare on Friday, because it is thought that the person responsible for the crime might want to attend.

Thousands of mourners are expected to line the streets of the presenter's home town along the three-mile route the hearse will follow.

Crimewatch UK will be broadcast at 2205 BST on BBC1 on Tuesday, 18 May and will be streamed from this site.
