Bunmi inquest adjourned
The inquest into the death of British schoolgirl Bunmi Shagaya, who drowned on a trip to France, has been opened and adjourned.
Coroner Selena Lynch said the schoolgirl from Brixton, in south London, whose full name was Olubunmi Afusat Shagaya, 11, had "died sadly" in France.
Pc Janet Barracks, of Lambeth Police, told the hearing at Southwark Coroner's Court that Bunmi's body had been identified by her mother in France on 5 July.
Bunmi had disappeared three days earlier at a lake at
Cany-Barville, near Dieppe, while on a trip with 40 other pupils and six teachers from Hill Mead school, Lambeth.
The coroner said Bunmi's body had been returned to Greenwich mortuary and adjourned the inquest until 16 October.
Funeral cortege
Thousands of people are expected to attend Bunmi's funeral on Saturday.
The cortege is expected to make its way from her home to the Old Kent Road mosque and then on to Streatham Cemetery.
An autopsy carried out in France confirmed Bunmi had drowned in the lake, giving the cause of death as accidental and saying there were no grounds for suspicion.
But French authorities are expected to investigate whether the teachers in charge of the trip were negligent.
The schoolgirl's family is demanding a full explanation about her death and Lambeth Council has pledged to launch a full independent inquiry.
