Towns triumph in broadband tests

The majority of British homes now have access to broadband but the speed at which they are connected to the internet varies widely.

Distance from the local telephone exchange is one factor governing connection speed and people living in the countryside may find their service is slower than those in towns.

A test like the one below can give you an indication of your current connection speed.

Once you've taken the test, plot your result on the map below and see how it compares to other users' results.

STEP 1: TEST YOUR CONNECTION

Results are indicative only and should not be taken as proof of your connection speed.

There are many factors that can influence speed, including your broadband package, location, whether your neighbours are online, computer configuration and applications, time of day and even the weather.

Please bear in mind that your speed is likely to fluctuate over the day and this test can only give an indication of your current connection speed to the BBC site which may be affected by traffic to our servers during peak times.
