Blenders and Brand pick up awards

Screen grab of the Willitblend website A website demonstrating a blender that can turn an iPhone to pulp is among winners of the annual .net Awards.

The website - WillItBlend? - scooped the best viral campaign award.

BBC Radio 2's Russell Brand show won podcast of the year while social networking site MySpace got the infamy award for its "poor design".

Other winners included well-known brands such as Facebook, Firefox and Google, which picked up two awards for Gmail and its Google Earth application.

Innovation

.NET WINNERS

The dubious pleasure of winning the infamy award went to MySpace for what the judges described as "eyeball-bleeding poor design", blamed on the fact that users could customise the site to their own tastes.

The awards - now in their tenth year - see thousands of web users vote in 15 different categories.

It is then down to a panel of judges, drawn from online companies including the BBC News website, to decide the winners.

The title of Web Personality of the Year went to Kevin Rose, the founder of news aggregator Digg, which now attracts over 20 million unique users every month.

Other winners including blog Engadget, which won best blog of the year and Facebook which was crowned socially powered site of the year.

The awards, organised by .net magazine, show how much innovation is currently going on in the industry, according to .net magazine editor Dan Oliver.

"Google and Facebook were always going to feature heavily but it was great to see some new faces being recognised as well," he said.
