Former US president Jimmy Carter has won the 2002 Nobel peace prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Mr Carter merited the $1m award for promoting peace and democracy throughout the world.

The chairman of the Nobel committee said that the decision to award the prize to Mr Carter should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the current American administration has taken.

Professor Joseph Rotblat founded the Pugwash Committee and in 1995 won the Nobel peace prize for efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. He answered your questions in a live forum.
