Former US president Jimmy Carter has won the 2002 Nobel peace prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Mr Carter merited the $1m award for promoting peace and democracy throughout the world.
The chairman of the Nobel committee said that the decision to award the prize to Mr Carter should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the current American administration has taken.
