The bosses of the three biggest US carmakers, Ford, GM and Chrysler, have asked Congress for a $25bn bail-out.

The car industry is facing a thoroughly bleak future unless the Federal government comes to the rescue.

Of the "Big Three" American carmakers, General Motors is looking the most vulnerable after unveiling last week losses of $4.2bn in the third quarter, and admitting that without new investment it could run out of cash early next year.

However, Republicans and the White House say they do not want to use the $700bn bank rescue to help car firms.
