Boro agree £3m for Gazza
Paul Gascoigne, who vowed never to play in England again, may join Middlesbrough from Glasgow Rangers in a £3m deal.

The England midfielder's lawyer, Mel Stein, is meeting Middlesbrough's management to discuss the details and, subject to a medical, the player could be playing at the Riverside Stadium by the weekend.

The Middlesbrough manager, Bryan Robson, said: "We have agreed a fee with Rangers and are close to a deal with Gazza.

"It is now a question of agreeing personal terms. I have left that to Keith Lamb, our chief executive, and Mel Stein.

"If personal terms are agreed Gazza will come down either tonight or tomorrow for a medical. Gazza would be a big asset to this club if we get him."

If the deal goes ahead, it will come as a huge relief to the troubled midfielder who has been censured by the Scottish Football Association.

Gascoigne has played little first team football this season thanks to suspension and an ankle injury.

He has been left out of the England squad facing Switzerland and Glenn Hoddle, England's coach, has warned him he must prove his fitness in the next two months.

Playing a key role for Boro' who are chasing promotion may be the 30-year-old's best chance of proving he can still make the grade.

Censured over flute incident

Meanwhile, Gascoigne found support after being handed a "very severe warning" for his flute-playing mime during the Rangers-Celtic New Year clash.

It was the second time Gascoigne had made the traditional loyalist gesture which infuriated the largely catholic Celtic fans.

But while the SFA and Rangers criticised the player, the Scottish Football Supporters Association and the Scottish Players Union' both condemned fans who verbally abuse players.

Martin Rose, secretary of the Scottish FSA, said: "Fans should realise that players have sensitivities just as they do.

"They should be aware of that when they think about hurling insults. There is no place for gestures from players, but there is also no place for outrageous behaviour from supporters."
