The Scottish Football Association Council has agreed to present Brown with the opportunity to sign a new agreement to run from the end of his current deal after the World Cup finals in France this summer.
He has already intimated a desire to stay in the job.
SFA spokesman David Findlay said: "I can confirm the four-year offer to Craig Brown of a new contract until 2002 is in the minutes.
"The finance committee have approved the international committee's recommendation, but beyond that there is no information regarding a timescale."
Four years in job
Brown was appointed Scotland manager on November 17, 1993 in succession to Andy Roxburgh, having joined the SFA's full-time staff in 1986.
Under his charge Scotland reached Euro 96, where they were narrowly denied a quarter-final place, and last October qualified for France 98.
Brown's playing career, which included spells with Rangers, Dundee andFalkirk, was brought to an early end by a serious knee injury.
After his enforced retirement he moved into teaching, combining a career in education with formative steps in football management.
After a four-year term as assistant coach at Motherwell, he moved to Clyde, where he took charge for a decade.
At national level Brown enjoyed success with the Scotland under-16, under-19 and under-21 sides, and as assistant coach to Roxburgh before taking over from him.
The SFA will now hold talks with Brown to finalise the details of a contract he is expected to sign before World Cup preparations begin later this month with a friendly against Denmark.
