Zimbabwe's shock win against South Africa on Saturday had turned this rain-delayed match into a winner-takes-all affair with the loser going out of the tournament.
And with the help of a controversial lbw decision against Graham Thorpe, the Indians coped with the pressure far better than the English middle order, which simply crumbled away.
The game at Edgbaston was the first in the tournament to use the reserve day after rain spoilt Saturday's scheduled finish.

Thorpe began with a boundary, but was soon on his way.
Javagal Srinath's ball struck the left-hander on the pad, but looked to be going down his leg side.

The umpire did not agree and a clearly unhappy Thorpe went for 36 with England 81 for four, needing 233 to go through to the next round.
The dismissal brought 21-year-old Andrew Flintoff to the wicket, with a replacement bat after the theft of his first choice from outside the team's changing room on Saturday evening.
He made 15, including one massive six off Anil Kumble but the Indian spinner got his revenge in the same over when the young Lancastrian was also given out leg before.
Deep trouble
England were in deep trouble as Adam Hollioake came out to join Neil Fairbrother with the score 118 for five and just over 18 overs remaining.
Hollioake always looked nervous against Kumble and eventually played across the line, missed a straight ball and was given out leg before.
It left England relying on Fairbrother as Mark Ealham joined him briefly.
The Kent all-rounder showed no capacity to support the experienced left-hander when he gave away his wicket with catching practice for Mohammed Azharuddin at first slip off Saurav Ganguly.
As against South Africa a week ago, England's middle order was crumbling just when it was needed most.
Fairbrother goes
And all hope was gone when record-breaking batsman Ganguly showed his all-round ability by enticing the Lancashire veteran into edging the ball behind outside the off stump.
Nayan Mongia took the catch and with England still needing three figures to win Angus Fraser joined Darren Gough, with last man Alan Mullally waiting in the dressing room.
The seam bowling trio were never going to do it, despite some extravagant hitting from Gough, who eventually went for 19.
The Yorkshireman was close to a six off Prasad as he desperately tried to counter-attack but the shot was just a few feet short of its target when it was caught on the boundary by Kumble.
Mullally was eventually bowled by a yorker from Srinath and it was all over.
Saturday details
On Saturday England had restricted India's record-breaking batsmen to a reasonable total in the crucial group A showdown.
But England's reply never gathered speed after two early wickets and the later dismissal of Nasser Hussain as the rain came down.

Put into bat, India looked set for a total in excess of 250 as they cruised to 130-2 on a sunny morning in front of a noisy packed house.
But none of the in-form Indian batsmen got into their stride, although Rahul Dravid made 53 to follow his two World Cup centuries.
And the innings slipped away as Dravid gave his wicket away with a poor shot and Azharuddin top edged to Hussain running back from point.
Some late-order aggression came from Ajay Jadeja with 39 off 30 balls but England would have been satisfied with the 232 they had been set.
But despite this relatively meagre total, England's hopes of an easy run chase were ruined by Debashish Mohanty taking two early wickets.
Out-of-touch captain Alec Stewart was caught by Azharuddin before Graeme Hick lasted just two balls.
It was 13 for two although Hussain and Thorpe were able to recover to 72 for two.
Then rain had already started when Hussain was dismissed with the Essex man clearly unhappy that play was still going on.
But his disappointment was nothing to what was to follow on Sunday.
