A selection of images from the moment the Scotland supporters arrived in London to the agonising final outcome for Craig Brown's team at Wembley.

Scotland fans travelled straight to the historical first port of call - Trafalgar Square.

The passion was evident from Scottish fans both young and old - and they were in good spirits before kick off.

The stakes were high - a place in Euro 2000 not to mention national pride - as highlighted by this young supporter standing defiant.

Kick off - England's Michael Owen got little change from his marker David Weir.

Hampden goal-hero Paul Scholes could not reproduce his form from last Saturday.

Scotland pressure told in the 39th minute when Neil McCann crossed a ball in from the left.

The centre was met by striker Don Hutchison who rose above the England defence to head past a despairing Seaman.

England 0-1 Scotland - The Everton forward gave Craig Brown and the Scottish fans hope just before half time.

Half time - Keegan had a lot to think about during the break.

England were limited to half chances during the match - captain Alan Shearer hardly had a sniff at goal.

Scotland midfielder Craig Burley had to take time out on the orders of referee Collina - the Celtic player picked up a bloody injury which forced the referee to send the player momentarily off from the pitch.

England's Jamie Redknapp played on the left but more than often had to contend with the ever-present threat of striker Billy Dodds.

With just a few minutes left even Scotland defender Colin Hendry was thrust forward to try and grab that vital second goal.

Full time - England survived the final tense minutes - the image of David Beckham leaping into the arms of 'keeper David Seaman was not only one of celebration, but also relief.
