Sri Lanka says its top general has left the US without being questioned over alleged war crimes committed during the conflict with Tamil Tiger rebels.
Gen Sarath Fonseka was on an official visit to the US when Sri Lanka said officials announced plans to interview him, triggering Sri Lankan protests.
A foreign ministry statement praised the US authorities for their "receptive and constructive attitude".
The US government refused to comment on the Sri Lankan government's remarks.
"The Department of Homeland Security does not confirm or deny the existence of any investigation," a spokesman told the BBC.
