Thousands attend Kashmir protest

Indian police block a road during a strike in Srinagar on June 26, 2009.

Thousands of people have taken part in anti-Indian demonstrations in parts of Indian-administered Kashmir despite a government-imposed curfew.

The protests in the town of Baramullah were sparked by the death of a man when police used live rounds to disperse a rally in Tuesday.

The state government has now withdrawn the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force from law and order operations.

The dead man was the fourth person to have been killed during the protests.

Schools, shops and offices have been closed in many parts of the Muslim-dominated Kashmir valley following a strike called by separatists in protest at the shootings.

Authorities say the firing by the Central Reserve Police Force was totally unwarranted and the police have registered a case of murder after Amir Rashid who died from bullet injuries to his head.

Local residents allege that the CRPF targeted the upper bodies of the protesters. A curfew is in force in the main town of Baramullah for a third day running.

There have also been protests in towns neighbouring Baramullah as well as the capital Srinagar on Wednesday.
