Dozens killed by illegal alcohol

More than 40 people have died from drinking poisonous illegal alcohol in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, police say.

The victims were in the state capital, Bangalore, and the district of Kolar.

Restrictions on buying alcohol are in place in Karnataka because of state elections. Another 13 people died in a nearby area of Tamil Nadu state.

Most of the dead are poor, migrant workers. Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in South Asia.

Police in Kolar district said victims had bought cheap illegal alcohol and after drinking it complained of severe stomach aches and vomiting.
